MLL has been informed by Little League Inc that as of January 1, 2018, the new USA Baseball Bat standard will take effect.  That means "officially" that any Little League-approved baseball bats that were approved for use during the 2017 season will no longer be acceptable for use in any Little League game or activity.  This new standard affects all MLL divisions from tee ball through juniors, although tee ball bats produced/purchased prior to this date may be certified for play through the USA Baseball Tee Ball Sticker Program.

MLL's plan to deal with this change is the following:

  1. As old bats are retired due to wear, damage, and age MLL will replace in accordance with the USA Baseball Bat standard.
  2. For the Spring Season T-Ball, Machine Pitch A, Machine Pitch AA, and Kid Pitch AAA divisions these teams will continue to use the bats currently in stock in our inventory. USA Baseball Bat standard bats are permitted for use though of course. The rationale behind this is that these teams play games within the MLL perview and associated fields.
  3. For the Spring Season Majors, Intermediate 50/70, and Juniors divisions these teams will continue to use the bats currently in stock in our inventory for batting practice and in games if umpires don't have issues with it. However, MLL will supply these teams with enough USA Baseball Bat Standard bats to support the team as needed. The rationale behind this is that these teams play games outside the MLL perview in the District 2 Interlock schedule.
  4. For the 8-10, 9-11, Majors, Intermediate 50/70, and Juniors All Star Teams MLL will supply these teams with enough USA Baseball Bat Standard bats to support the team as needed.
  5. For the Fall Season Machine Pitch, Kid Pitch, and Middle School Kid Pitch divisions these teams will continue to use the bats currently in stock in our inventory. USA Baseball Bat standard bats are permitted for use though of course. The rationale behind this is that these teams play games within the MLL perview and associated fields.
  6. The recommendation to MLL parents is that if you are purchasing a new bat for your player please abide to the new USA Bat Standard. MLL can help you with any questions you may have.

The easiest way to determine if a baseball bat is approved for Little League play in 2018 is to look for the USABat logo:

This new rule does not affect wood bats.  Solid, one-piece wood bats that adhere to Little League’s regulations will be allowed for play with or without the USA Baseball mark. Multi-piece wood bats must have the USA Baseball mark to be approved for play. This includes two-piece wood bats, composite wood bats, laminated wood bats, bonded wood bats, bamboo bats, and any wood bat that could be defined as an ‘experimental’ design.
